Music in the Mountains was created in 2005 in order to present a wide range of high-quality concerts in all musical genres in the mountain villages in the Limassol and Paphos regions, including Lofou, Trimiklini, Silikou and Ineia as well as occasional events in Limassol and Paphos.

Thursday 16 November 8pm 2023 Lofou

AVGI & MEMNON – LOUNGE ROCK

The eleventh concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains series, featured very soulful, thoughtful rock from Avgi & Memnon who, whether an original or a cover, made every song their own special gem. Agrovino Wine Bar Lofou was full on Thursday 16 October as the duo entertained with songs including I Wanna Do Bad Things To You, Banf Bang, Back To Black and Stand By Me. Avgi Stavrou has a distinctive, melancholic voice and Memon Arestis displayed exquisite, finger-picking electric guitar playing and a subtle use of a loop station to accompany his emotionally charged solos. The quality of Avgi’s original songs was indistinguishable from the big hits she covered, such is the quality of her writing. VICKY & ERMIS PLAY JAZZ!

There was a delightfully cozy atmosphere at the sell-out concert from the outstanding musicians Vicky Anastasiou (vocals) & Ermis Michail (guitar), on Wednesday 8 October, at the tenth concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains series. The superb vegan restaurant, o Linós in Ineia, was absolutely packed with music lovers, as the duo delivered their own jazzy take on standards like My Baby Just Cares For Me and Straighten Up And Fly Right, plus pop, rock, blues and reggae tunes including Unchain My Heart, No Woman No Cry and Englishman In New York. Vicky displayed a laid-back and ethereal vocal style incorporating unusual effects and body percussion, while Ermis showcased his impressively complex guitar work to great effect. There was plenty of humour, some requests, and a little Greek, Spanish, and Portuguese, all adding to the totally satisfying performance, which had the audience crying for more. THE LIMASSOL JAZZ SYNDICATE

There was a full house at John’s Restaurant Trimiklini for the brand-new big band Limassol Jazz Syndicate dynamically directed by legendary sax player Giorgos Krasidis, on Thursday 2 November, the ninth concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains series. The atmosphere at the newly-refurbished restaurant was electric, as the band started with some well-loved standards, some swing and funk, including an amazing version of Pick Up The Pieces. Vocalist George Kalopedis really sung up a storm on well-loved songs including Bad Bad Leroy Brown and Fly Me To The Moon, ending on a rousing rendition of Night Train. YOGEV SHETRIT TRIO

The eighth concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains series, at Agrovino Wine Bar Lofou on Thursday 19 October, featured The Yogev Shetrit Trio performing original compositions influenced by traditional North African music, Gnawa and Andalusian music from Yogev’s Moroccan heritage, along with contemporary jazz and Mediterranean styles, including flamenco. The musicians are simply virtuosos who have totally mastered their instruments and deliver a stunning mix of beautiful melodies, together with tempo changes and complex rhythms, often in fast triple time (waltz). There were plenty of riveting drum solos of course, plus fantastically fast piano licks and deep, warm bass which held the audience enthralled throughout. THE FLUBOE TRIO  

Music in the Mountains went to town with The Fluboe Trio on Monday 16 October with a stunning performance at the Cornaro Art Institute in Limassol. This wonderful 1896 building, lovingly restored by Andros and Eleni, once again hosted an incredible evening of superbly performed Baroque music from Germany, Italy, France and yes, even Sweden! Thanks to Klaus Storm (oboe), Florian Rabe (flute) and Agnes Tang (harpsichord), Anita Tomasevich for inviting us, Andros, Eli and Eleni at Cornaro, Cata for the poster and programme notes, and the enthusiastic support of the audience of new and old friends.

TIMELESS GREEK SONGS (1970 – 2000)

The delighted audience were left with smiling faces and sore hands at the sixth concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains season on Thursday 5 October at John’s Restaurant Trimiklini. Georgia Kombou (bouzouki), Antonis Georgiou (keyboards/vocals) and Isavella Christofidou (vocals) delivered a multitude of toe-tapping, hand-clapping Greek hits with great sensitivity and extraordinary technique, including Never On A Sunday and Zorba’s Dance of course, plus many enduring melodies from the last century. The uplifting show was further enhanced with a joyous demonstration of Cypriot and Greek folk dancing, which involved much audience participation. JAZZ THE GREEK WAY!

We were very fortunate to have some native Greek-speakers in the audience to lead the gentle singalongs to the charming songs from yesteryear, in the Greek swing, latin, classics, traditional and Rembetika genres performed with a jazzy feel so beautifully by Loukas Louka (piano) & Nicole Ardanitou (vocals). Although all the songs were performed in Greek, Nicole very helpfully introduced the songs in English, so the entire multi-national audience could participate. The wonderful evening at o Linós in Ineia, on Wednesday 4 October, was the fifth concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains season and included well-loved Greek songs including Mis Irlou, Min Rotas Toa Ourano and S’agapao Giati Se Orea. In fact, S’agapao (I love you) come up a lot in these heartfelt songs! Thanks to the musicians, Cata for the poster, Lyndsey and her staff for the beautiful food and warm welcome, and the wonderful singing of our enthusiastic audience.

THE FLUBOE TRIO

Baroque was King at the fourth concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains season, at an exceptional performance at Silikou coffee shop, aka ‘The Classical Kafeneio’ on Thursday 28 September, with the magnificent Fluboe Trio. The extremely accomplished musicians enchanted the audience with trios for flute, oboe, and harpsichord, including Bach’s Sonata in D minor, the Sonata in G minor by Handel and the beautiful Concerto in D minor for oboe and harpsichord by Alessandro Marcello, proving once again that high quality music can be enjoyed in almost any location! Thanks to the musicians: Klaus Storm (oboe) with Florian Rabe (flute) and Agnes Tang (harpsichord). Thanks also to Ermoulla, Andreas and their friends at the coffee shop, Christakis for the stage, as well as Cata for the poster, plus Mike and Pam for the kind invitation and co-ordination of the entire production. KATERINA & GEORGE PLAY JAZZ! Katerina Andreou (vocal), George Morfitis (piano)

The third concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains series, featured jazz standards; those well-known and enduring songs, suitable for reinterpretation and improvisation. Katerina Andreou (vocals) and George Morfitis (piano) amply demonstrated their mastery of the genre at Agrovino Wine Bar Lofou on Wednesday 20 September. Their varied set included swing and latin titles such as Fly Me To The Moon, Dancing Cheek To Cheek, Blue Moon, Besame Mucho, Sway and The Girl From Ipanema, the later sung in Spanish as well as English. There were also some surprises, including the Toy Story hit, You’ve Got a Friend in Me and classics Moondance and Valarie. The entire performance was a delicious mix of cool jazz, warm personalities with a light delicate touch, combining to make a feel-good, toe-tapping, finger-clicking evening of smooth as silk music. KEVIN ABRAHAM: Singer-Songwriter with special guest Clare Hurrell (violin)

Kevin and Clare presented a thoroughly entertaining performance at the second concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains season, at o Linós Ineia, on Wednesday 13 September. Great folk/pop/rock/blues songs, many with a twist, and hilarious humour, came in equal measure, as the duo delivered an eclectic set of reimagined acoustic covers and originals, showcasing Kevin’s James Taylor-inspired finger-picking guitar and relaxed vocal style together with Clare’s exciting and often amusing violin and clarinet playing. The evening had the atmosphere of an intimate gathering of friends, like a house concert. There was much between song banter covering topics such as dropped D’s, Capos, bar chords, new strings, electronic tuners, trains, and Clare’s 1912 French violin called Bobby. The sell-out crowd loved it all! Perhaps the most surprising number was a hand-clapping mash-up between the Yiddish song, Hava Nagila and the Greek classic, Zorbas Dance, closely followed by The Sailor’s Hornpipe and the classical piece: Czardas. MARIOS DANOS & THE DIZZY BEES 

Legendary musician Sting once said that in music, above all else, he looks for surprise. He would have loved tonight’s performance. Marios Danos & The Dizzy Bees, delivered a powerful and exciting evening of blues, folk and rock at the first concert of the Autumn Music in the Mountains season on Thursday 7 September at John’s Restaurant Trimiklini. The band, consisting of Marios Danos (guitar, vocals), Donn Torres (bass) and Dimitris Panayides (drums), presented a daring and eclectic set of top tunes from the history of popular music ranging from Bob Dylan to Jethro Tull and Paul Simon to Cream. They included a stunning mash-up of The Rolling Stones’ Paint It Black and the theme from Pulp Fiction, itself based on Misirlou, a traditional Greek folk song. Thin Lizzy like you have never heard it before, Johnny Cash as a swamp blues and Hendrix with as much panache as the master himself, combined to impress the astonished and delighted audience. SCHROEDER STRING QUARTET

Mozart in a coffee shop? Will it work? Will people come? Answers: yes, yes and yes! It was a bold plan to turn a beautiful coffee shop into a ‘Classical Kafeneio’ and it totally succeeded with a super team effort by the lovely people of Silikou. The twelfth and final concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season on Monday 5 June, came to a memorable close with a stunning performance from the Schroeder String Quartet The new quartet, all members of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, performed works by Mozart, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn to a very high standard with great love and commitment that was a joy to experience. Many thanks to the musicians: Wolfgang Schroeder (violin 1), Iraklis Mitellas (violin 2), Kumiko Okutomi (viola) and Jakub Otcenasek (cello). Also, to Christakis and Yiannis for the stage, Marilene and Marios for the seats (especially the cushions!), Ermoulla, Andreas, Tina and their friends at the coffee shop, Cata for the poster, plus Mike and Pam for the kind invitation and co-ordination of the entire production. MR WILSON – REGGAE / FUNK

Billed as a reggae/funk band, Mr Wilson delivered that and much more at the eleventh concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season on Thursday 1 June at John’s Restaurant Trimiklini. The newly-refurbished restaurant was looking stunning as the band started with cool and laid-back reggae tunes from Bob Marley (of course) but also some surprises with reggae versions of pop hits from Sting, Michael Jackson, and Amy Winehouse. The second set started slow with Ain’t No Sunshine, before going up-tempo with the 10cc smash Dreadlock Holiday and an amazing heavy jazz/funk version of the Bee Gees classic Stayin’ Alive. With some soul/reggae and even Greek reggae and Happy Birthday reggae style, the band was cooking before ending with a party set including some Ska that got the audience on their feet with cries for more! KATERINA & GEORGE PLAY JAZZ!

The duo, featuring Katerina Andreou (vocal). George Morfitis (piano) performed two stunning sets to a sell-out audience at the tenth concert of the Spring Music in the Mountain season, at o Linós Ineia, on Wednesday 17 May. The first set consisted mainly of jazzy versions of well-loved songs of yesteryear, such as Dream A Little Dream, Fly Me To The Moon and Cry Me a River. Later, the duo entertained with more contemporary songs including Make You Feel My Love, Ain’t Nobody and Valarie. Every song was a sparking jazzy gem, really showcasing Katerina’s amazingly clear voice and precise diction alongside George’s complete mastery of the jazz piano genre. Both musicians displayed great sensitivity to the material together with outstanding creative improvisation, which really impressed the audience in a most memorable evening of music, food, wine and laughter. MACUMBA – LATIN JAZZ

Music to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step, was delivered by top Latin Jazz band, Macumba at the ninth concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season. The uplifting and passionate performance, including covers and originals, on Thursday 11 May at John’s Restaurant Trimiklini put everyone in a good mood. Some of the crazy song titles included Chips, The Salty Kind, Everything Always Goes Well and Nothing Ever Goes Wrong… yes really! Sueño ibérico: SPANISH POETRY & MUSIC

Mariza Anastasiades (soprano), Socrates Leptos (guitar)

A superbly-crafted performance of Spanish music, by Mariza Anastasiades (soprano) and Socrates Leptos (guitar), transported an enthralled audience to Spain and South America at the eighth concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season, on Thursday 4 May, the Agrovino Wine Bar Lofou. The carefully chosen programme focused mainly on 19th and 20th Century composers such as Manuel De Falla and Heitor Villa-Lobos, some works based on traditional melodies, plus a special treat of two pieces from Renaissance composer Alonso Mudarra. The songs came across like delicate little flowers, beautifully nurtured; sometimes melancholy, sometimes joyful and always exquisite. Thanks to the musicians, Dimitris and Chara at the wine bar, Cata for the poster and the wonderful support of our loyal, enthusiastic audience.

SEA GYPSIES – BLUES FUSION

The Sea Gypsies proved almost any great song can be turned into a blues, as they thoroughly entertained a sell-out audience at the seventh concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season, on Thursday 20 April at John’s Restaurant Trimiklini. The veteran blues fusion trio consisting of Tammy Joe Stewart (guitar, vocals) Jim Williams (bass, vocals) and Dave Samwell (drums) played blues classics from the likes of BB King, Robert Cray and Jimi Hendrix. They also turned songs like Ain’t No Sunshine, I Shot The Sherriff and Rainy Night in Georgia into creditable blues numbers. They even took soul legend Stevie Wonder’s song Superstition and made a whole new psychedelic heavy blues tune that brought the house down. The combination of Tammy’s delicate guitar work and crystal-clear voice, together with the rock-solid bass and drums of Jim and Dave, made this a very tight band and night to remember. AVANT TOUT DUO – Vanessa Megalemou (vocal), Vasilis Vourvopoulos (piano)

Variété Française is a style of French popular music that emerged in the 1950s and is characterized by its use of melody, catchy hooks, and often sentimental or romantic lyrics. Avant Tout Duo, featuring Vanessa Megalemou (voice) and Vasilis Vourvopoulos (piano) proved they are masters of this genre, delivering a fantastic and emotional show to a full house at the beautiful Vegan restaurant; o Linós in Ineia, on Tuesday 11 April. Hits from Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Dalida, Michel le Grand and more, transported the spellbound audience to the Parisian cafes and theatres with Vanessas’ amazing vocal control and Vasilis’ virtuosity at the piano and their charming sense of humour. The sixth concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season was a resounding success, thanks to the musicians, Cata for the poster, Lyndsey and her staff for the beautiful food and warm welcome, and the enthusiastic support of our multi-national and attentive audience.

JAZZ PIANO DUO  – Vahagn Hayrapetyan & Dimitris Miaris

Dueling Pianos? No. The Clash of Titans? Nope. The Jazz Piano Duo, featuring Vahagn Hayrapetyan, the international jazz piano star from Armenia, and top local jazz pianist Dimitris Miaris, was an exhilarating collaboration, based on mutual respect; a celebration of jazz standards that was anything but standard. Their creativity and enthusiasm for the Bebop genre created a magical evening to a capacity audience at the beautiful Cornaro Art Institute in Limassol on Monday 10 April. The fifth concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season really was something special. Thanks to the musicians, Anita Tomasevich for coordinating the event, Andros and Eleni for the venue, Cata for the poster and the dedicated support of the audience of new and old friends.

THE JAZZ TRIO – ft. GIORGOS KRASIDIS

The Jazz Trio is so cool, even the double bass player is called Ron Cool! Agrovino Wine Bar Lofou was temporarily renamed The Rural Ronnie Scott’s, a respectful nod to the famous jazz club in London. The fourth concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season on 6 April, featured inspired version of jazz standards including Night And Day, Bye Bye Blackbird and Autumn Leaves, an amazing version of Duke Ellington’s Caravan and the great Wayne Shorter tune, Footprint. The capacity audience also enjoyed a very funky version of Watermelon Man, the uplifting Latin classic St Thomas and a super Dixieland version of All of Me, complete with vocals from band leader Giorgos Krasidis (saxophone). The legendary Irenaeos Koulouras AKA Ron Cool (double bass) and the very tasteful sounds of Stelios Xydias (drums) completed the trio. JAMIE PAUL IN CONCERT

Pianoman Jamie Paul impressed on World Piano Day at o Linós in Ineia on 29 March. The third concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season was preceded by a delicious and healthy dinner at the beautiful Vegan restaurant, expertly run by Lyndsey England and her team. Jamie Paul told us of his musical life in the UK and Cyprus and of his great love for soul music and his heroes, such as Otis Reding and Nina Simone. The two sets of classic pop, soul and blues songs were perfectly balanced and Jamie showed his love and respect for the material whilst giving each song his own authentic and unique interpretation. Standout songs included Feeling Good, With A Little Help From My Friends, When A Man Loves A Woman and many classics made famous by Jackie Wilson, Bob Marley, David Gray and Lionel Ritchie.  He also showcased some impressive original material. BACK TO BACH with Anita Tomasevich (piano) and Olivera Rialas (violin)

Bach and wine: the perfect combination! The second concert of the Spring Music in the Mountains season, on Thursday 23 March in Lofou Wine Bar, was a wonderful homage to JS Bach. Anita Tomasevich (piano) and Olivera Rialas (violin) performed masterpieces by JS Bach to celebrate his birthday and thoroughly enthralled the very attentive capacity audience. The bar staff deserve a prize for the quietest servers in Cyprus! There was a surprise guest at the end. Famous local composer David Pentecost gave us a rare treat by performing two of his Nocturnes, one especially arranged for piano and violin. ABZORBA – TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC with JJ Cuddihy (Irish box, guitar, vocals), Bernadette & Noelle Robinson (violin), Phil Willcock (guitar, banjo, vocals)

St Patrick’s Day came early on Thursday 16 March as the full house, at the first concert of the new Spring Music in the Mountains season, enjoyed traditional Irish music at its best. Abzorba, consisting of JJ Cuddihy (Irish box, guitar, vocals), Bernadette & Noelle Robinson (violin) and Phil Willcock (guitar, banjo, vocals) plus surprise guest Graham on bass, performed jigs, reels, and hornpipes plus well-loved songs such as Fields of Athenry, Danny Boy and Wild Rover. We were blessed to have an excellent dancer in the audience which was a real treat and there was lots of singing along and hand clapping. What a great atmosphere! The concert was switched to Caffe Marcelletti Trimiklini as the original venue, John’s Restaurant (next door) is still undergoing extensive refurbishment. Drama ensued when the power as cut at 4pm due to a traffic accident. Twelve electricity company engineers worked hard to restore power whilst Pambos and his team were able hook up a generator because of course the show must go on! ALEXANDROS TSANGARIDES IN CONCERT with Alexandros Tsangarides (piano, vocal).

The tenth and final concert of the Autumn MITM season came to a memorable close with an amazing performance from The Crew frontman Alexandros Tsangarides. Lyndsey England and her team produced a tasty and healthy dinner at the beautiful Vegan restaurant; o Linós in Ineia. Alexandros selected a set of classic pop songs and jazz standards and made them his own. His fine keyboard technique and strong soulful voice, together with his charming personality really connected with the spellbound audience at the sell-out event on Wednesday 23 November. Thanks to Alexandros for the music and poster, Lyndsey and her staff, Lara, Bryan, Yara, Mike and Paul for publicity and the loyal support of our attentive audience. We now look forward to the the Spring 2023 concert series, which will include classical, jazz, blues, folk, latin and more!

Veteran singer-songwriter and guitar/vocalist Kevin Abraham delivered an eclectic mix of original songs and covers to an enthusiastic and attentive audience at the tenth concert of the current MITM season on Thursday 10 November at John’s Restaurant Trimiklini. Kevin was joined by excellent violinist and singer Clare Hurrell who really added extra texture and a good deal of humour to the music. Their show included top songs by Dylan, Donovan and other folk legends, all played in Kevin’s James Taylor influenced guitar style. There were some wonderful original and traditional melodies, blues, jazz and even a classical piece, based on Hungarian folk melodies: Czardas by Italian composer Vittorio Monti. If you like Sinatra, you will love Michael Antoniou! The eighth concert of the current MITM season had the Agrovino Wine Bar Lofou audience spellbound, as Michael and ace jazz pianist Renad Nourmanchine (AKA Moonriver Duo) entertained the capacity audience, on Thursday 27 October, with top-quality swing and pop classics. The seventh concert of the Autumn MITM season was a departure from the usual mountain venues to visit Cornaro Art Institute in Limassol, a wonderful 1896 building, lovingly restored by the Andros and Eleni. The event, on Sunday 23 September, was a super-feel-good display of Baroque music from the newly-formed Fluboe Trio, featuring Klaus Storm (oboe), Florian Rabe (flute) and Agnes Tang (harpsichord), which had the audience thoroughly entranced by the beautiful melodies and first class playing. LEFTERIS AND ERMIS PLAY JAZZ! with Lefteris Moumtzis (vocals) and Ermis Michail (guitar).

The sixth concert of the new MITM season was an outstanding mix of great food, a warm welcome and some extraordinary jazzy moments. It was our second visit to o Linós in Ineia, so creatively and beautifully run by the lovely Lyndsey England. Ermis Michail (guitar) brought along the amazing Lefteris Moumtzis (AKA Freedom Candlemaker) to sing for us. Together, these guys made a very special event delivering an eclectic collection of songs in creative, intelligent and surprising arrangements with some witty comments between and even during some of the songs. The sold-event, on Wednesday 19 October was a resounding success! Talented singer-songwriter Kirsty Dewar presented a delightful mix of originals and covers to a captivated and attentive audience at the fifth concert of the current MITM season on Thursday 13 October at John’s Restaurant Trimiklini. Kirsty’s set included top songs by Ed Sheeran and Alanis Morissette, as well as classics made famous by Sinatra and Elvis. However, it was her own original songs that really touched the heart; she sang them with such great passion and conviction. The third concert of the Spring MITM season was very special, as our Baroque buddies, The Fluboe Trio, presented their new ensemble for the very first time. The Agrovino Wine Bar Lofou was absolutely full with an enthusiastic audience, on Thursday evening 15 September. The superb musicians Klaus Storm (oboe), Florian Rabe (flute) and Agnes Tang (harpsichord) performed joyous music from Telemann, Kleinknecht and Loeillet to great acclaim. The second concert of the Autumn season was truly special. Our jazzy buddies Alice Ayvazian (voice) and Dimitris Miaris (piano) travelled to a new venue for us, so creatively and beautifully run by the lovely Lyndsey England; o Linós in Ineia. Here, Lyndsey did her magic in the vegan kitchen and our duo covered the American Songbook in glory and love. The sold-event, on Wednesday 7 September was we hope, just the start! The second concert of the Spring season was amazing.
