Georgia Kombou is the only female Cypriot soloist of the bouzouki. She also plays mandolin, laouto and tzoura. She is an award-winning composer whose work is inspired by Thanasis Polykandriotis, the famous composer from Athens. Born in Limassol, Georgia began playing music at the age of nine, attending piano and theory at the Greek Conservatory of Limassol. But the signs were there from an even earlier age: while very young Georgia would, she says, hold a sewing needle and a matchstick in a pretence of playing the mandolin. Of course, no parent could ignore the obvious signs, and when her father noticed his daughter’s interest, he quickly bought her a bouzouki – an instrument which has since become her trademark. Fast forward a few years and, in 1990, Georgia set off for Thessaloniki to study music, quickly building her reputation as she began to perform in concerts and make appearances in local television stations. She participated in various festivals for several years and has recently won awards for her bouzouki playing. In 2016 with her composition ‘To Diko sou Yiatrikon’ taking third place at the National Composition Prize in the ‘Traditional music today in new compositions’ category. In 2019, Georgia was awarded the Bronze Medal in several categories at Global Music Awards.

Trimiklini is a picturesque village, surrounded by green orchards, located approximately 27 kilometres northwest of Limassol in the largest valley in Cyprus, at an average altitude of 570M. The village is bordered on the south by Lania, on the west by Silikou and Kouka, on the north by Moniatis, on the northeast by Pelendri and on the east by Agios Mamas. Trimiklini is famous for its double bridge; the only one in Cyprus. Local residents grow grapes and fruit trees, including nectarines, peaches, plums and pears here. They have also long been engaged in the production of zivania and wine. Part of the cultural heritage of the village is the building of the primary school, which opened its doors in 1926. Then, it had an enrolment of 49 students. Now it’s community property, restored by the municipal council. Currently, 11 children from the community attend the new district school. The Green Valley waterfall is worth the walk along a narrow path, hidden in the shade of century-old trees. There are several outdoor cafes and restaurants, a fruit market, where you can buy freshly picked fruit and vegetables, and small shops with sweets, including excellent mountain honey, plus two interesting churches dedicated to the Virgin of Mercy.
