CLASSICAL GUITAR RECITAL with BEN KEARSLEY

Join Ben for a fantastic musical journey through time and place, from Bach, Schubert, Beethoven, and Mozart, to popular film music of the 20th Century. The programme includes Cavatina from the Deer Hunter and the Harry Lime Theme from the Third Man. Ben also performs Folk music from Japan; The Spring Time Cheery Blossom, and Sakura, and delivers Bolivian and Spanish passion, including the Concerto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo and Asturias by Albeniz. Presented by Music in the Mountains.

There is also a traditional coffee shop near the church. Ben Kearsley (guitar) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He began classical guitar with Norman Quinney and later with Ian Smith. During his time at school Ben won The Young Musician of The Year 1993 at James Gillepies’ High School and the Norman Quinney Prize for Classical Guitar. Performances at the Usher Hall and Queens Hall in Edinburgh took place during this time. After five years of full time study in music (one year at Napier University and four years at Birmingham Conservatoire) Ben graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire in 1998 with a BMus (Hons). During this time Ben performed in masterclasses for Alirio Diaz, Jose Tomas, David Russell, Roland Dyens, Nigel North and Carlos Bonell. Performances at the Adrian Bolt Hall, Birmingham Town Hall and Symphony Hall took place during this time. During the 1990’s Ben attended many summer schools in Scotland, England, France and Belgium. After studying, Ben lived in La Paz, Bolivia and then Madrid, Spain. He taught guitar at the Conservatoirio De La Paz and performed at the British Embassy, Palacio Chico and Theatre Municipal. From 2004 Ben has toured the UK giving hundreds of concerts. Ben has recorded 10 CD’s and a DVD.

ACCOMODATION

The Spidaki Lania is in the beautiful artiste’s village of Lania close to the concert venue. It is a stone-built garden house renovated to a high standard and available through booking.com.

The Old Olive Mill Dhoros is a lovely and unique old stone house in a secluded spot at the end of a road, in the quiet farming village of Dhoros, nestled on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, about 2Km from Lania. Lania is a picturesque village situated in the Limassol District. It’s known for its traditional Cypriot architecture, cobblestone streets, and beautiful vineyards. It is also famous as the Painters’ Village, with some excellent artists in residence plus several traditional museums. The village offers a serene atmosphere and is popular for its wine production, particularly Commandaria, one of the oldest named wines in the world. The village is located at the foot of the Troodos Mountains on the main Limassol to Troodos road, about 26Km from Limassol. Lania is one of the country’s main wine producing villages. According to tradition, Lania got its name from Lana, daughter of the Greek god of wine and pleasure, Dionysos. This indicates the deep roots of the village in the field of vine-growing and wine-making. The village is well known for the high quality of its grapes and wines.

Music in the Mountains was founded in 2005 by Pam Groves, Mike Groves and Andrew Oliver. It was created in order to present a wide range of high-quality concerts in all musical genres in the mountain villages in the Limassol and Paphos regions, including Lofou, Trimiklini, Silikou and Ineia as well as occasional events in Limassol and Paphos.
